Bishop Smith Pays Tribute to Gerard Lillis
Bishop Michael Smith made a presentation today to Gerard Lillis, the outgoing Director of Sacred Music.
Gerard was appointed Director of Sacred Music by Fr Sean Henry in 1997 in succession to Shane Brennan.
Gerard’s connection with Mullingar stretches back to his student days as a member of the Schola Cantorum in St Finian’s College. It is evident that Gerard received a rich musical education in the College and our parish has been the beneficiary of his training.
Gerard has been at the heart of all the most memorable and significant liturgical moments in the Cathedral over the past two decades. However we want to pay tribute also to his work for us in the day-to-day life of our parish, from weekend Masses to First Communions and Confirmations and we know that many people have appreciated his contribution to family funerals and weddings too. Our choir members have valued his leadership and their loyalty to him has been a tribute to his dedication.
Bishop Smith pays tribute to Gerard’s work in training young liturgical musicians not only for the Diocese of Meath but throughout Ireland through his work with the Schola Cantorum. He is grateful that the project begun in the 1970s by Fr Frank McNamara, who enrolled Gerard into the Schola, continues to such a high standard and is eager to maintain the connection between the Schola and the Cathedral into the future.
