Mass of Remembrance, Wednesday 19 November 7.30pm
The Mass is open to everyone and especially families from Mullingar who have lost a loved one over the past twelve months. The Mass is being organised by the Parish Bereavement Group.
During the Mass the names of all those whose funerals have taken place in the five churches of Mullingar will be read out. A commemorative candle will also be lit for each individual person. Prayers will be offered for the deceased and for all those coping with the loss of a loved one. It is hoped that family members will take this candle home afterwards.
As part of this year’s Mass, Elma Walsh, who lost her teenage son Donal last year, will talk about how she grieves and what helps her to cope. Elma has spoken in many churches over the past year about how her faith helps her. In August she took part in the annual novena in Knock. Elma’s son Donal continues to be an inspiration to many people throughout the country. The foundation #LiveLife founded by Elma and her husband Fionnbar keeps alive Donal’s inspirational message on living life. This years’ Irish Bishop’s Conference ‘Day for Life’ highlighted the extraordinary Christian witness of this young Kerry teenager.
We are conscious of the many people who grieve in our parish. One in ten adults in the country are affected by the death of someone close to them every year. 120 funerals were celebrated in the parish churches in Mullingar since last November. Each of those people have loved ones who deal daily with their loss. We are grateful to Elma Walsh for accepting the invitation to speak in the Cathedral. The Walsh family have carried a heavy cross in a public way and they continue to promote their son’s love of life.
The Parish Bereavement Group organises support for parishioners dealing with grief. They offer a listening ear to people through one to one confidential meetings and through group help. A 6 week Bereavement Support Programme will start in the spring (one hour per week) for people who have experienced bereavement prior to the last twelve months.
