Preparations underway for Christmas

The stars are beginning to shine.  Final preparations are underway at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar for the Christmas festivities, commencing with the Carol Service on Sunday at 5.30pm.

It is estimated that several thousands of parishioners attend confessions in the Cathedral in the run up to Christmas.  The parish penitential service will take place on Monday evening at 7.30pm while confessions will be available throughout Christmas Eve from midday until 5.30pm.

The Mullingar Town Band will make its annual welcome appearance at the Mass for Christmas Eve in the Cathedral at 10.00pm, celebrated by Bishop Michael Smith.  Earlier that evening, the family Mass for children will take place in St Paul's Church at 6.00pm.

In the photo, Fr Joseph is helped by Tom Lynch as he adjusts the star over the crib.  Fr Joseph brought this star from Kerala, India where it is a prominent tradition, similar to the candle in the window of Irish homes.
