Bishop receives a candle and reflects on "painful truth"

From the Bishop's homily at the Chrism Mass

"There has been much pain and distress over recent times as the sins and failings of many are revealed. The sinfulness of abuse, the failure of leadership, the hurt caused to victims and the sense of being let down which is felt by many in the community - these are part of the painful truth which we acknowledge and which, as Pope Benedict reminds us, has left a "grievous wound" on the Church. This sinfulness and these crimes must be acknowledged and accepted.  And while one can never remove humanity's frailty and the propensity to sin and to evil every effort must be, and is being, made to prevent such recurring again. We believe truth ultimately rests in God and a failure to seek and acknowledge the truth is a failure to be faithful to what the Lord asks of us."
