Ringing the Bell - a call to mission

The Eucharistic Congress Bell was welcomed to the Cathedral on Friday 14 October.  The Bell will visit every parish in Ireland in the run up to the International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin next June.

The Bell is a key symbol of the International Eucharistic Congress. It represents the invitation to faith, to prayer, to reconciliation and to mission which has always been important in our Christian tradition and is no less so today.

Children from St Colman's NS rang the Bell with parishioners attending Mass at St Paul's Church.  The procession made its way along the canal and up Bishopsgate Street, where it was joined by children from both Presentation schools.  A guard of honour was provided at the entrance to the Cathedral by pupils at St Mary's CBS.

Photos of the visit of the Eucharistic Congress Bell, kindly supplied by James Wims, are available here.

At the beginning of the Mass, Fr Michael Kilmartin drew attention to the four icons which accompany the Bell.  He explained that icons are part of our common language today - sporting or cultural icons, as well as icons on our computers.  But these four sacred icons each cast light on the Eucharist.
