Rev. Kevin Heery & Fr Ger Fitzgerald ordinations

The Cathedral and Saint Paul's Church have seen a different face at the altar on Sunday mornings in June.  Rev. Kevin Heery has been helping out in Mullingar since he was ordained a deacon in Maynooth on 31 May.  A native of Lynn Heights, Rev. Heery will spend the remainder of the summer doing chaplaincy work among the Irish emigrant community in Boston.

Before departing to USA, Rev. Heery took part in the ordination of Fr Ger Fitzgerald in Limerick last Sunday (19 June).  The new Limerick priest spent 2009 - 2010 at Mullingar Cathedral as part of his preparation for ministry.   Fr Fitzgerald's mentor during his time in Mullingar was Fr Colm Browne who, during the ordination ceremony, vested the new priest in his chasuable for the Mass.  Speaking before the ordination, Fr Fitzgerald thanked the priests and parishioners of Mullingar for the part they played in leading him to priesthood.  Prayers were offered for Fr Fitzgerald in the Cathedral last weekend.

Plans are already underway for Rev. Heery's ordination at the Cathedral on Sunday 9 October.  Although looking forward to priesthood, he is keen to take one step at a time.  "My first priority at the moment is the work I'll be doing with the Irish emigrants in Boston.  Emigration can be a painful separation for the families at home and for those who travel abroad.  I hope that I can help in some way to support the community and to learn from the experiences of those who are making their home away from home", Rev. Heery explained.
